To our knowledge this the first time the creative industries in the region has been geographically visualised in a map. This map has been created for research purposes - in the first instance - for Creative Informatics to ascertain where the creative industries were located in the region (Edinburgh City, the Lothians, Scottish Borders and South Fife as part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal). It used the most readily available granular geographical datasets on the creative industries (as per DCMS definition or Scottish Government definition) which are data collected through SIC codes, which have geographical data attached to it to enable the map to be created. This data from 2019 was drawn from FAME, in turn mostly collated through Companies House. The researchers are aware that this data is flawed as it mostly excludes the freelance workforce on the creative industries, whose data is often not collected through this channel. The map as such thus raises more questions than answers around data collection on the creative workforce. The map as such has inadvertently become a tool for engagement with the sector on the value of data collection by grass roots organisations, the value of SIC codes, a critique on the data collection through national data gathering mechanisms and a starting off point for local mapping of the creative industries for local agencies and organisations. This is as such thus not a map which proclaims to give an accurate overview of the creative industries of the region, but rather a starting point for dialogue and conversation.
